2008 Annual Conference

Travel

Airfare to Ottawa is proving to be quite pricey as we've seen on recent ATLANTIS discussions. Share your travel tips and ideas here.

There seem to be direct flights from a number of US cities on the east coast and midwest as well as many Canadian cities. Which airlines are you using?

3/07/08 American Airlines just dropped its price from LAX/Los Angeles to YOW/Ottawa by about US$150. Still more expensive than some flights to Europe, but better than it was.

Housing

Looking for a roomate? The Westin Ottawa and Novotel offer rooms with two double beds at affordable rates. Post your contact information, gender and attendance dates here to find a roommate.

For those of us traveling on a budget, I suggest the University of Ottawa residences, about a mile (walking distance is less) from the conference hotel. The rooms start at $40 per night. Go to [18] for more information. Or you can email me (Laureen Harder Gissing) at: laureengh@gmail.com.

Other tips

Looking for a great exchange rate? Curious about how to answer questions during the border crossing? Share your advice with fellow ATLA members here.

To get the best exchange rate in a foreign country, I use my bank's connections. I exchange only a small amount of money in advance, if any, and withdraw money from an ATM at the airport. Banks give their best rates to each other and this tactic has served me well in Canada and Europe. Charging expenses to your credit card also helps ensure a good exchange rate. Looks like the exchange rate is pretty equal right now. From Currency converter, http://www.xe.com/.
